- LETTERS, Page 8Lucas and the Law
-
- President Bush's attempt to appoint William Lucas as
- Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights was misguided
- (NATION, Aug. 14). As a black American, I find it deeply
- insulting that someone who has never tried a case or written a
- brief should be nominated for such a pivotal post. It is not
- enough to be black; the candidate should be the best-qualified
- person to be found.

- Barbara J. Green Dorchester, Mass.
-
- Shame on you for running down Lucas, who not only graduated
- from law school but who also has had a long career in the field
- of law enforcement as a police officer, an FBI agent and a
- sheriff. Have you forgotten that Chief Justice Earl Warren never
- sat as a judge on any bench before he joined the U.S. Supreme
- Court?
